"NEWS & VIEWS"

The Cocky Classic III

14/12/2008.

Great Weather greeted participants and volunteers alike for the III Cocky Classic. Cloudless skies for the main with the odd couple drifting lazily by occasionally. There was quite a strong North Easterly breeze which was fanning a decent shore break and making it a bit cool for participants and volunteers.

After contending with the shore break, broken waves were around the 2-3 foot mark, providing participants with a challenging and exhilarating ride into the shallows. Both participant and volunteer levels were brilliant- 32 and 57 respectively!

For participants who wanted another surf they could have one, The majority of participants were mobile and several were getting up on the planks. Heaps of fun was had by one and all with the volunteers once again doing a fantastic job. I thanked one volunteer for his help and he simply replied that he got more from the experience than the participants.

Lunch was put on by our tremendous cooks as always. After time in the surf one's always ravenous. Awards were presented by Daffy, handed out by Damien in the following categories-

Wave of The Day- Kurtis Mays.
Surfer of The Day- Corrin Wilson.
Wipeout of The Day- Adam Cazalet.

A 12 foot, Ron surfboard from 1962 was graciously donated by Jim Cazalet to be used to raise maximum funds for our branch using whichever means is chosen. Much appreciation goes out to the Tweed Longboarders club, the Tweeed Shire Council and our super volunteers who make it all possible.

Happy Surfing and Merry Christmas,
Adam Casalet.
Joint Secretary DSA FNC N.S.W.

NSW "SOUTH COAST" BRANCH

Record Number of Attendees

Thirroul Beach 6th Dec 08

The 16th annual Disabled Surfers "Have A Go Day" at Thirroul attracted a record crowd of 205 attendees.

Huey, the DSA surf deity, again provided perfect conditions with even the southerly around midday being a mild affair.

With 131 volunteers in attendance, including 38 students from 8 local schools, as well as surfers and members of the general public, the day kicked off with the traditional paddling races in the adjacent continental Thirroul pool.

An hour later we were in the surf - falling tide and 1m waves - perfect.
Operating with as many as 10 boards simultaneously, but with less when more challenging participants required 2 or more teams of volunteers to assist, most of the 42 participants each enjoyed 3 surfing sessions.

"There were 2 ½ hours of wipe-outs, long rides and some unbelievable tubes," said South Coast DSA branch president Ian Picton.

While waiting their turn to surf, the giant sand modelling competition was being run by the inimitable Lenny Snowdon. Subsequently, Lachlan Edmunds took out first prize with his human sculpture of Ralph Harris.

After the horde was fed and watered, the major awards were presented only being first interrupted by Santa, looking remarkedly like long time committee member Cec Campbell's twin brother Nicholas (St), who almost arrived in a puff of smoke.

Toss the Flipper: was taken out by Culburra's Keiran Dinnerville, who travelled up by train from Bomaderry and wheeled himself to the beach from Thirroul station, with a new south coast record throw of 15.87m - what an all round brilliant effort;

Wave of the day: Kiama's Lawrence Clarke with a screamer from out the back and finishing with a head-stand in the white water;

Wipeout of the day: Sean Loves for a 4 second hold down;

Longest tube ride: Susan Kirkness with a 5 second visit to the green room;

Most inspirational: was taken out by Warilla's Ashley Hanson for real courage under fire (well at least under water);

Best Novice Surfer: Jaydon O'Connell for his first time efforts;

Furthest Travelled on the Day: was easily won by Tom 'Terrific' Bolwell (16,977 km to Pommy land) - and reportedly had to hop all the way;

Surfer of the day: was won by popular Parameadows surfer Kelly Kendall for a series of great manoeuvres.

In closing, Mr Picton thanked the Thirroul SLSC, Wollongong Council, all the volunteers, for their ongoing support and the surfing industry, in particular the Surf Pit Corrimal, Wollongong's Extreme Surf, Kiama's Zinc Surf and Gerringong's Natural Necessity Surf Shop.

"See you all at Gerroa on Sunday April 5 next year or if you cannot wait til then, attend one of the northern branches events at Newcastle or the Central Coast in the meantime or make the largest annual DSA event in Australia at Collaroy on Saturday 28th February," finished up Mr Picton.

The Winner of the

“DSA Surfer of the Year”

for 2007/08 is…

Marie Juriwova – Sydney Branch - Participant.

The OFFICIAL JUDGE of the DSA Surfer of the Year for 2007-08 was Ted Kabbout, DSA Far North Coast.

The WINNING Comment from the Nominees DSA Branch:

Marie turned up unannounced to the 2007 Sydney HANDS ON DAY, just wanting to go surfing.

I had never met Marie, yet her massive smile and determination was obvious from the first minute.

Marie suffers from a muscle disease that creates severe muscle weakness throughout her entire body. Her body weight is determining, her ability to walk, talk and move is extremely limited, yet she turns up at Sydney, Central Coast, South Coast and Hunter Region events, every time they are held.

Marie has inspired many people where ever she ventures, she could have let her issues control her

Life, yet she wants to live life to the fullest and go surfing whilst she can. Her spirit and attitude is one of the DSA and one that I admire.

Marie won the Surfer of the Day at the Sydney 2008 Hands on Day, and there is no one who better deserves the “DSA SURFER OF THE YEAR” 2007/08.

The JUDGES Comment:

There is always something special about your first surf. That day, that moment, when you get your first wave and it becomes embedded in your mind forever…

Marie had her first surf at the 2007 Sydney Hands on Day and has been to just about every Sydney, Central Coast, Hunter and South Coast event since.

Marie’s determination in getting out there and surfing and her obvious stoke for surfing make her a worthy recipient of the 2007/08 - DSA Surfer of the Year.

As her nominee pointed out, “Her spirit and attitude is what the DSA is all about.”

MID NORTH COAST

"Branch gets new trailer"
Article: Coffs Coast Independent

(Pics-Click Here)
NEIL WOOD 17/10/2008

THE excitement on the faces of young surfers as they ride waves to shore was enough to convince Chris Allen to take charge of the Mid North Coast branch of the Disabled Surfers Association of Australia (DSA).

"It's why I took the job on," the branch president said.
Chris, whose son Shea suffers from a disability after a near-drowning incident, was singing the praises of the association yesterday when he was joined by Member for Cowper, Luke Hartsuyker, to launch the branch's new trailer at Park Beach Plaza, using the occasion also to promote the branch's first surfing day at Jetty Beach on Saturday, October 25.

Chris said the origins of the trailer were a mystery. He inherited it just weeks ago as part of the presidency role.
He's not sure who arranged for it to be purposely built, or who provided the money to have it completed.
All he knows is that Coffs Harbour firm BD Engineering was responsible for its construction.
Chris is thankful to whoever put the project together. The enclosed trailer will allow the branch to carry boards, special wheelchairs, wetsuits, rashies, shade tents and a barbecue to events along the Mid North Coast.

All Chris needs now is the equipment to fill it.
The branch current uses special wheelchairs provided by the Coffs Harbour surf and yacht clubs and have two boards on loan from the Sydney.

Chris hopes to raise the $4000 needed for each wheelchair and $1000 for each specially made board by selling sponsorship space on the new trailer.

He said ideally the branch needed two wheelchairs and four boards to allow it properly to cater for the growing number of disabled surfing participants along the Mid North Coast.

He plans to sell $300 packages, which entitles the sponsor to signage (100mm x 300mm) on the branch's trailer for three years. Mr Hartsuyker is the first to sign up as a sponsor.

Mr Hartsuyker said he was proud to support an organization which encouraged people with disabilities to go surfing.
"I think it is great that people with disabilities are being encouraged to get outdoors and enjoy getting in the water and having a surf," he said.

Mr Hartsuyker encouraged others to get involved with the local branch.
"It would also be good to see businesses and the wider community financially support the local association," he said.
"I know they have plans to purchase their own barbecue, surfboards and gazebo, but they need to raise additional funds."

Chris said he had plans to approach local businesses to have some items donated, like a barbecue and tents.
"It costs about $2500 to keep the branch going every year with insurance and now (trailer) registration," Chris said.
Chris said having more funds would allow the branch to stage more events each year.
As well as the Let's Go Surfing Day at Jetty Beach on October 25, other events are planned for Woolgoolga on January 10 and one for Scotts Head early in 2009.

Chris hopes to increase the number of event to six next year.
"It's just an adrenalin rush for them (participants) - seeing them catch a wave and beat it (to the beach), it's just an amazing, amazing day," Chris said.

Chris said at the completion of each surfing day a barbecue was held at prizes awarded to participants judged to have caught the biggest wave or had the biggest wipeout.

DSA was formed in 1986 and has branches throughout Australia. The Mid North Coast branch formed last year.
The association allows people with a disability to enjoy the thrill of surfing.
Anyone who would like to sponsors the local branch or volunteer at one of its surfing days should contact Chris Allen, phone 0437 274 474 or e-mail chris.fit@hotmail.com

 MID NORTH COAST

"Let's Go Surfing Day"

 Saturday 25 October, 2008.

The mid north coast branch of the Disabled Surfers Association have announced Saturday 25 October, 2008 as the first Let's Go Surfing day for the season. The branch was established last summer and held 2 successful surfing days for surfers with disabilities ranging from Downs Syndrome and cystic fibrosis through to amputees and paraplegics.

The venue for this first event is Jetty Beach in Coffs Harbour, with the DSA setting up and registering on the front lawn of the Yacht Club. Volunteers are asked to register from around 9am, with surfers signing on around 9.30am. There is no cost involved, and surfing will go through til about 1pm with prizes and a free BBQ lunch supplied.

All volunteers wanting to assist, whether they have completed the training day or not, are encouraged to come down and lend a hand under supervision from experienced volunteers. All disabled people, regardless of the level of disability, are encouraged to come down with a carer and give surfing a go. The motto of the DSA is 'surfers helping surfers' and a great day out is guaranteed.

The second event for this season is tentatively scheduled for Woolgoolga Beach on Saturday 10 January, with a third surfing day later in the season penciled in for Scotts Head.

The branch recently took possession of a custom made trailer which will be used for the first time at this event, and are seeking sponsors to help with the ongoing costs of running the trailer, purchasing equipment and organising the events.

"NEWS FROM THE GOLDIE"

Another DSA Gold Coast season finished with probably our best day yet on the 29th March 2008. Huey finally answered our prayers and turned on near to perfect surf for a DSA event with a glassy two foot swell and no wind, sweeps or rips to worry about. With a good turn out on the day of new and old faces participants and volunteers were out in force and a great day was had by all.

One new DSA surfer from Brisbane, Teresa Bechard (pictured right), was a stand out on the day and experienced the DSA surf stoke that we all know so well. Teresa had a fall four years ago and is now a C6 Quad but that wasn’t stopping her! After riding some great waves for the first time of her life on a surf board (Teresa is 57 years young) the tears of joy were flowing by all involved. A few of the Goldie crew went up to Noosa the following weekend to lend a hand at the Sunshine Coast’s second event (which by the way was a great success!!) and Teresa turned up again to ride some more waves (this time with half of her wonderful family along to watch) – that DSA bug just keeps on biting!! Well done Teresa!!

Steve Pickering who is our Disability Coordinator (and for those that don’t know a C5 Quad) is now doing some mind blowing body surfing on his back with the help of a few of his mates after our events. It just goes to show that nothing is impossible and that the ocean is a great playground under the right conditions.

With great sadness we will be saying good-bye at the end of April to the lively “Texas Teri” who is heading back to the USA after 8 months here on the Gold Coast where she has been studying at Bond Uni. Teri (pictured left) has CP and has been a regular surfer at Gold Coast, Byron Bay and Sunshine Coast events and her infectious love of life has helped make a lot of friends along the way. Not bad for some one that lives hundreds of miles from the ocean!! So, good luck back in the USA Teri – we will see you back in the water when you return to Australia!!

So that’s it for another season – thanks, as always, goes out to all involved with our branch, the wonderful participants and volunteers, all our supporters and sponsors and the hard working committee. Keep an eye on the web site for next season’s dates and we look forward to catching up with some of the DSA crew at the National AGM (all being well to be held on the Gold Coast later this year).

See you in the surf!!
Craig and the Goldie Crew.

Volunteers comment:

I was a volunteer on the Gold Coast day on 29th March and have just read the comments from a participant on your website. I will never forget that day either nor her face as she sped towards the shore. It was extremely well organised event and as a new volunteer it was an eye opener for me.

Thanks to Craig and the team.

Jen

"Sunshine Coast - Noosa"

The sun has set on the 07/08 season for the Sunny Coast branch, our first season. What a year it has been, two big events, a train the helper and a demo for the Festival of Surfing, phew.

Saturday 5th April saw us end the season with a gorgeous day at Noosa main beach. Huey was most kind to the crew and delivered some clean smokin two foot sets and plenty of sunshine for the day. With 35 participants booked in for the day (final count was 49) it was primed to be a big one. With a bit of a minor hiccup in the morning, hey we didn't know they were getting married where we set up the barbie!

The day looked set for some good vibes and smokn rides .With well over 100 volunteers and six teams in the water it was almost poetry in motion ,DSA style .With our new Maroon marquees in place on the beach, a most professional outfit we did look.

The day was a real mixed bag of participants but one deserves a special mention our "Surfer of the Day" trophy winner, 70 year old Elsa with M/S and being wheelchair bound she was an inspiration to every one on the beach.

Let's keep the momentum going again next season and all come back for another blast of DSA magic.

See ya out the back Gav.

"Gerroa Attracts Huge Crowd"

Over 300 people turned out for the 7th annual ‘Hands On Day’ at Gerroa on Sunday April 6 for the region’s disabled to get out and have a go at experiencing the thrills of surfing.

Despite the forecast of showers the Disabled Surfers honorary deity, Huey the Surf God, intervened giving a perfect day for the beach.

With volunteer host surfboard Club Malnutrition being heavily supplemented by students from 12 local high schools, together with surfers and helpers from the local community, the total helper pool was just under 200.

The 52 participants came from as far as the central coast and included our legendary Kelly McCann, a C2 quad who needs resuscitation the whole time she is in the water surfing with 30 helpers and 2 nurses.

The Northcott Society brought down from Sydney an extra 3 amphibious wheelchairs to add to the pool of 5 others enabling mobility challenged participants easy access to the beach and the waves.

With up to 10 boards operating at the same time, each with a minimum of 10 helpers, each participant enjoyed up to 3 surf sessions before the whole group retired back to the assembly point at Emery Park for a BBQ lunch.

At the prize-giving ceremony the major awardees were:
Sand yodeling: Marusha Rowe (Sydney)
Throw the flipper champ (a pilot pre-Olympic event): James Griffiths
Furthest Traveled on the Day: Kay Lawler (Leumeah)
Best Novice Surfer of the Day: Trent Potter (Wollongong)
Wave of the Day: Keiran O’Keefe (Umina)
Wipeout of the Day: James Griffiths and his dad Malcolm (Nowra)
Longest Unseen Tube Ride of the Day: Jenaleen Wolfe (Sydney)
Most Inspirational of the Day: Grace Kennedy (Vincentia)
Trophy for Surfer of the Day: Holly Laughlin (Tomerong)

Helpers of the Day Awards went to Jane Keel (Bomaderry High), Said Metwalli (Sydney) and Aleisha Brooke-Smith (Kiama High) - from an great field of helpers.

Disabled Surfers South Coast branch president Ian Picton was hard pressed to thank all contributors but the short list included Kiama Council, students from the local schools, longboarders Club Malnutrition, surf club members from Corrimal, Thirroul and Tathra, Lands Edge for the 40 wetsuits, recently retired top 10 surfer Michael Lowe for a dozen new wetsuits and some surfboards (thanks Lowey), all the region's surf shops for the generous amount of give-aways and all the volunteers for giving up a day to put "smiles on dials", Cowabunga Jim

Gold Coast gave me the most wonderful and never to be forgotten experience on Saturday 29th March 2008. I thought I would never ever feel the surf again, having an accident in 2004 which resulted in me becoming a Quadriplegic. The DSA helpers and volunteers were out of this world, fantastic and wonderful. No actual word is available to describe what they do for us. I can't wait for my next time.

Currumbin 29/03/08- will be a day my mum will never forget ...thankyou, thankyou, thankyou to everyone involved with DSA. To see mum yahooing on a surfboard will certainly be something I will also remember with a smile on my face. What you guys do for others cant be thanked enough.

Sunshine Coast 08/04/08-Thanks guys for yet another fantastic day of surfing on Saturday !!Needless to say Lucy had her usual wonderful time and Maddy, as a volunteer, says " Mum I had the best time " - it is so great to see her wanting to be so involved as well, not just with her sister but all the participants. She was bubbling over with enthusiasm about who she had helped and how great it was. It is lovely for us to feel such a part of the group and to be so welcomed when we arrive as well as renewing friendships and making new friends.
Wasn't Elsa amazing ? She was so stoked to have a go and nearly fell off her scooter when she won Surfer of the Day !! Please put Lucy's name down for the two events at the end of the year and pass on our thanks to the team leaders and marshals etc who all did an amazing job.
Who knows - we might get Lucy standing up one day!!

Coffs Harbour, thank you for a wonderful day today. We had a great time. Our son is 7 yrs old and has cerebral palsy. He was so excited and enjoyed it so much, and his little brother got to have a go too, which we really appreciated. The helpers were fantastic and very kind . thank you. Looking forward to next time.

"DSA Far North Coast"

First Event at Coffs Harbour (01/03/08)

Smiles on dials were the order of the day. The Disabled Surfers Mid North Coast had there first event on Saturday 1st of March with a massive turn out. The day was a complete success with over (70) helpers turning up, and over (10) eager participants.

The conditions were perfect with ideal surf running, light winds, and warm water. There was plenty of action with great rides all the way to the beach and a few good wipe-outs. The day had everyone getting plenty of waves and soaking up the surf and sun. All the surfing made for some hungry surfers who were all delighted with a free BBQ for everyone. We would like to thank Coffs Harbour Board riders for their donation of the meat and bread.

The Day was a total success for both participants, family’s, careers and helpers alike, with many touching moments and seeing the beaming faces of kids and adults alike getting the surfing stoke. A pure memorable day!!!!

The next event is at Scott’s Head on Saturday the 26th of April meeting at the surf cub at 9am which should be a great day. We would like to invite anyone with a disability along to come and have a couple of waves and a BBQ. Also we will need helpers available. If you haven’t done the train the helper day it does not matter. Just turn up.
